Ausstellung „Where Ideas Meet Art & Science“

Im Oktober 2024 hat die State Academy of Art Tbilisi / Georgien ihr georgisch sprachiges Doktorand*innenprogramm „Media Arts/Digital Media“ mit einem Zweig in englischer Sprache erweitert. Dieses Programm zielt darauf ab, moderne Forscher*innen und Künstler*innen auszubilden, deren Wissen auf den Möglichkeiten neuer Technologien und der Synthese traditioneller Disziplinen in den visuellen Künsten basiert.

Dies und die Tatsache, dass Karl Stocker, der Leiter des englischsprachigen Doktorant*innenprogramms, und zwei Studierende des Studiengangs aus Graz stammen, gaben den Anlass, eine im Foucault’schen Sinnne entdisziplinierte Kooperation anzustreben. Dabei arbeiten die georgischen und internationalen Dissertant*innen (aus Bulgarien, Pakistan und Spanien), der Tbilisi State Academy of Art (die auch selbst Künstler*innen sind) mit österreichischen Künstler*innen, Wissenschaftler*innen aber auch Unternehmen und Institutionen zusammen. Gemeinsam wird ein Projekt erarbeitet, das die österreichisch-georgischen Kunstvernetzungen und performativen Formate unterstützt und diese von der bloß akademischen Plattform in einen öffentlichen Raum positioniert.

Nach einem Vorbereitungsworkshop in Tbilisi im März 2025 wird nun am 25. Juli 2025 eine erste Präsentation von künstlerischen Arbeiten im Rahmen der Ausstellung „Where Ideas Meet Art & Science“ im Kunst Klub Kräftner in Graz erfolgen, die von einer zweitägigen Konferenz im ESC Medienkunstlabor begleitet wird.

Entstehen soll schließlich ein Mehrspartenfestival, das (zumindest) in Tbilisi im April 2026 und in Graz im Herbst 2026 stattfinden wird. Als dritte Location wird Linz mit seinem Ars Electronic Festival diskutiert.

Exhibition „Where Ideas Meet Art & Science“

In October 2024, the Tbilisi State Academy of Art expanded its Georgian-language doctoral program „Media Arts/Digital Media“ with a branch in English. This program aims to train modern researchers and artists whose knowledge is based on the possibilities of new technologies and the synthesis of traditional disciplines in the visual arts.

This, along with the fact that Karl Stocker, the head of the English-language doctoral program, and two students from the program come from Graz, prompted the pursuit of a cooperation that is, in a sense of French philosopher Michel Foucault, undisciplined. In this context, the Georgian and international (from Bulgaria, Pakistan and Spain) doctoral candidates of the Tbilisi State Academy of Art (who are also artists themselves) collaborate with Austrian artists, scholars, as well as companies and institutions. Together, they are developing a project that supports Austrian-Georgian art networks and performative formats, positioning them from a purely academic platform into the public sphere.

After a preparatory workshop in Tbilisi in March 2025, a first presentation of artistic works will take place at the exhibition „Where Ideas Meet Art & Science“ at Kunst Klub Kräftner Graz on July 25, 2025, accompanied by a two-day conference at esc medien kunst labor.

The main conference idea focuses on two key aspects. First, it aims to analyze the interdependencies among reality, artificial intelligence, design, and art. This analysis seeks to explore how these elements influence and shape one another in contemporary contexts, particularly in the digital age where boundaries between them are increasingly blurred.

Secondly, it raises the question of the added value that artistic productions and engagements bring to the scientific discourse. This inquiry will investigate how artistic practices can contribute to, challenge, or enrich academic discussions, potentially offering new perspectives and insights that traditional scientific methods may overlook. By examining these intersections, the conference aspires to foster a deeper understanding of the dynamic relationship between art and science in our rapidly evolving world.
